Trip Overview
Muktinath Temple is a sacred site for both Hindus and Buddhists located in the Mustang district of Nepal. It is situated at an altitude of 3,710 meters above sea level and is considered to be one of the highest temples in the world.
For Hindus, Muktinath is one of the 108 Vaishnavite shrines and is associated with Lord Vishnu. It is believed that taking a bath in the holy waters of the Muktinath Temple will wash away all sins and provide salvation or "moksha" from the cycle of birth and death.
For Buddhists, Muktinath is a place where Guru Rinpoche, also known as Padmasambhava, meditated and gained enlightenment. The temple complex also includes a Buddhist monastery and is considered an important pilgrimage site for Tibetan Buddhists.
The Muktinath Temple is famous for its natural spring which emerges from the rocks in the shape of a cow's head and flows into 108 fountains. The temple complex also includes a shrine of Lord Vishnu, a statue of Guru Rinpoche, and a Buddhist monastery. The temple is open to all visitors regardless of their religion, and the scenic beauty of the area attracts many trekkers and adventure seekers.
